Rod Production
Up until 1970, nearly all fishing rods were made from bamboo or fiberglass. Gamakatsu started looking for a way to make rods stronger and lighter, and saw carbon as an excellent material for fishing rods. Other manufacturers were already producing rods with carbon in them but no one was producing a rod made from 100% carbon. Gamakatsu set out to make a fishing rod that would be lighter and stronger than anything available at the time, but there were some obstacles to overcome.
First, rods made with a high percentage of carbon tended to curve instead of being straight. Also, it was difficult to achieve a consistent diameter among identical rod parts. Gamakatsu tested
different kinds of carbon material before finding the one best suited for fishing rods. In 1976 the first truly straight and 100% consistent diameter rod was produced by Gamakatsu. Through constant research and development, the world's lightest fishing rod, the Mark II, was introduced in 1983. This was the first fishing rod made from 100% carbon.
Today, all of Gamakatsu's rods are made from 100% carbon, and the carbon we use is of a higher grade than that used by NASA. We are constantly working on new products in order to make better rods for anglers.
